Welcome to the Rusty Bay Owners Club

We are the club who focus on the fun that "Rusty" type 2 busses bring to our lives.

Although we have members from all over the world,
the majority of us are based in England and love getting out and about in our vans.
We are very much a family oriented club, making sure we include the kids in any or all the activities we do.
(usually so that Dad or Mum can have an excuse for making a fool of themselves.)
So if you are like minded, then please join us - It's FREE !

Rusty Bay Treasure Hunt

Our first EVER event

The New Forest - Sunday August 5th 2001

Well it very nearly did not happen! Originally planned to take place in March, the Rusty Bay Treasure Hunt was postponed due to the outbreak of Foot and Mouth. This being the first event organised by Rusty Bay, it was important not to jeopardise its success by running it during the crisis.

On top of all this, as we were making the final arrangements, the campsite that had originally agreed to accommodate us now informed us that they had no room, so we had to seek alternatives. The Forestry commission site at Holmsley fitted the bill but would not allow pre-booking for less than 3 nights.

Also a road which was part of the closing stages of the hunt was closed, which meant that with very little time left we had to completely re-route everything.

Despite these initial hic-ups the event kicked off at 11.00am with everyone meeting at the rendezvous point. ( the Waitrose carpark in Ringwood) even the sun was shining.

It was great to see all the vans lined up. The kids were issued with their fun packs, complete with colouring competitions and an empty matchbox, in which they were to fit as many different things as they could find along the route. We distributed entry forms and the vans were started off, one by one. As the event was taking place in the New Forest (where there are strict 40-mph speed limits) we did not want anyone racing.

Everyone was away from the car park by 11.45, which allowed us enough time to make our way directly to the finish point at Woodgreen village hall to greet each van as it finished. The grounds had been decked with Rusty Bay bunting which was made by our kids. The BBQ was lit just as the first bus arrived back. This was "Spooky" driven by Mike and Diane Howles. We later understood just why they were first back , a good clear 20 minutes ahead of the next van.

With everyone safely at the finish point , and the kids still hunting for more things to cram into their matchboxes, we were able to run through the answers. 1st prize went to Matthew Grant Browning and his family with 82 points out of 100. Matthew took away a set of camping chairs donated by Just Kampers along with The Rusty Bay Trophy and his winners certificate. All runners up received a Just Kampers baseball hat together with a Rusty Bay certificate and key ring.

There were various other prizes awarded to,
The van that had traveled the furthest to take part - Chris Dickenson and his family down from Bolton.

The wooden spoon for the lowest score of 61/100 - Mike and Diane Howles in ‘Spooky’. No wonder they were 1st back.

And what Rusty Bay event would be complete without an award for the ‘Rustiest Bay’ which went to - Ruth Crosland

We also celebrated the 30th birthday of "Martha" owned and loved by Dave and Irene White. Irene baked a superb birthday cake, which we all helped “Martha” eat.

The colouring competition was judged and the winner was Steven (son of ‘Mucky Duck’) who was returning back to Swansea following a family holiday in France.

The prize for the most things in the matchbox went to Phoebe. All colouring competition entrants will be displayed ASAP on The Rusty Bay web site.

Pete was organising the ‘Rusty Boules’ tournament, which ran while everyone basked in the afternoon sun. 3 group champions were soon determined and awarded prizes and certificates. They then had to face the challenge of (self-acclaimed) champions Mel, Pete and Mark. We have a running Boules battle that takes place when ever we get together, so we decided that we should take on the 3 group winners.

Matthew was elected as impartial referee and the battle ensued for all of 3 ends as we wiped them off the floor 10-nil. Never the less, we awarded them with some further prizes. The gauntlet has been thrown down for a re-match at VanFest in ‘Camp Rusty bay’.

So the first Rusty Bay event had finally taken place. I must admit, by the end of the day, we were totally shattered. As we reflected on the days’ events, we tried to think if any of it could have been any better.

Well we prayed for sun and the sun shone. All who said they would come, came. All who needed camping facilities, found them. All who could only join us at the end, found us. The BBQ was ready on time and all were catered for. The PA system worked. The venue was perfect. We found our members to be, exactly as we would wish them to be. And we went home already planning for next year.

Our thanks go to Just Kampers for donating the great first prize and baseball caps. Also to Viking Tyres for donating numerous raffle prizes. We would like to thank our families for their tremendous support and hard work on the day. And most importantly, we thank our members for supporting us with their attendance.

When we started the Rusty Bay Owners Club, our aim was to create a community for VW camper lovers to belong to, regardless of the state of their vehicles. We vowed that we would welcome one and all who shared the passion and pure fun of owning a VW camper. We vowed to include, not exclude people, provided they shared our sense of fun, and we wanted any gathering of Rusty Bay Owners Club members to be all about having fun. The success of any Rusty Bay event, would be determined by one single factor. Simply that everyone should go home, feeling like they had enjoyed a fun day out.

Judging by the smiling faces that waved us goodbye at the end of the day, I think we might just have done it . . . . . and that will do for us.

The Festival is in its 4th year and is growing rapidly, the location is Ilkley Moor West Yorkshire.. The date is 7th 8th 9th August
We have just had a feature in the Guardian newspaper as one of the top 20 small U.K festivals (2500 people) the line up for this year is awesome including The Utah Saints, Long Blondes and Forward Russia plus many more top acts.. The festival is child friendly and we welcome families.

We are currently developing the festival to incorporate our love of VW's and the people who drive them, so this year we are planning to hold a Show and Shine Competition at the festival.

We are looking for entrants who would be willing to bring their VW's to show, we can offer FREE weekend festival tickets and a secure area to camp etc to entrants....
